October 17th 2009 - Bahookie Touch Challenge, Edinburgh An enthusiastic Lions team took the short trip east to the capital for the first ever Bahookie Touch Challenge at Marine Drive. The Bahookie Touch Challenge was organised to give the Lions and Superhands a reason to keep playing Touch in October, as well as fostering improved relations between the two teams. A full sized Touch pitch, proper markings and two refs were provided meaning this was one well organised friendly.
Fourteen Lions took part in the Challenge. The 14 were: Kris Matthews John O'Dowd Jamie Holbrook Stevie Little Louise Heritage Sinead O'Loughlin Anita Fleming Vinny Bryson Ruban Kanth Ruth Cameron Audrey Murphy Kieran Kearney Douglas MacRae Denis Donoghue The Lions have a disappointing record against Superhands, having played 7 times already this season, with a solitary draw and 6 defeats as the outcome. The Bahookie Touch Challenge presented us with an opportunity to even up the score slightly, though it would be tough against a well drilled team. The first match proved to be a baptism of fire, as the Lions lack of training and Touch action in the last month led to a 7-2 defeat. Not getting downhearted was the theme of the day and Vinny Bryson stood out as motivator in chief, as well as the architect of a sweet Lions score. Douglas MacRae cut out to the wing from the middle, looking for his winger. A pass was sent which Vinny tapped down in a classic way to Jamie Holbrook who finished off the score. The second game started promisingly, but again Superhands proved too strong to run out 5-1 winners. At this point the Lions were becoming downhearted, but an inspired pep talk from psychological guru Bryson and a goal setting exercise from Ruth Cameron perked up the spirits and the Lions went into the final game with renewed optimism. The Lions came flying out of the blocks in this game, converting three early scores, the most spectacular of which was a full length dive by Ruban Kanth, converting his enthusiasm into pure forward momentum. Unfortunately, the Lions were pegged back by Superhands and the game finished 4-4. So, no win for the Lions against Superhands in 2009, with the final record standing at 2 draws and 8 defeats, but that shall all change in 2010! Superhands voted for the Lions player of the tournament, giving it to Vinny for his enthusiasm, play and general attitude to the game, and to Ruban for his overall play and the wonderful dive. An Italian meal was enjoyed by most afterwards in Edinburgh city centre and the wine fairly flowed. A fantastic day out was had by all and it is the Lions turn to host in early 2010.
